Wheelchair Power Lifting

Wheelchair power lifting is a sport that is designed to be participated in by individuals that have mobility issues with their lower bodies. These issues can run the gamut from partial to full paralysis as well as amputation and congenital defects. There are may other forms of disability and functionality created issues that may cause an individual to be in a wheel chair. Power lifting in a wheelchair has been a Paralympic event since the second iteration of the Paralympic games. At the time the games also included wheelchair bodybuilding. However, in recent years only power lifting has remained.

The difference between a power lifter and a body builder in regards to sport and competition is often subtle. However, the general consensus is that a power lifter can lift very heavy weight. A bodybuilder looks like they can lift very heavy weight.

In the Paralympics wheelchair power lifting was originally limited to individuals with spinal column injuries. However, the rules have changed slightly over the years and more individuals with differing disabilities have begun to compete.

It is performed in a manner nearly identical to non-wheel chair using athletes. Only the lower body portions are removed from a work out regimen if necessary. Bench pressing and power curls are the most prolifically cited exercise regimens and event categories in competitions. The sport itself has many worldwide competitions.
